Entreprise MEtallica a écrit:Metallica will celebrate Record Store Day (April 18) this year by reissuing their 1982 demo tape, No Life ‘til Leather, in its original cassette form (yes, that rectangular plastic thing.) Announcing the news on their website, the band says they’ve remastered the original source material to bump up the sound quality, but have kept the mixes untouched so fans can experience the demo tape as it was heard back in ’82.
Drummer Lars Ulrich spoke with Rolling Stone about the reissue, “Twelve people will be able to play it, but everybody else will be able to hold it in their hands and, uh, have a great time with it,” Ulrich said, laughing. The demo has never been commercially available until now, and to prepare for the April 18 release, those interested in actually playing the tape can buy a cassette player for as little as 10 dollars over on Amazon.
Fans can expect No Life ’til Leather to be the first of several reissues from Metallica’s catalogue, all of which will be coming from the band’s label Blackened Recordings. The re-releases are something Ulrich says the band has been thinking about doing for awhile, “It’s time for us to put out some next-level reissues and do the song and dance of the catalog that everyone else has done; the U2s and the Led Zeppelins and the Oasises,” Ulrich continues. “Instead of starting with Kill ‘Em All in 1983, we figured we’d go back another two years to when the band was formed in 1981.”
So what was life like for the original Metallica lineup back in the early ‘80s? Ulrich, who was only 18 at the time of the demo’s creation, reminisced, “We drank a lot of sh–ty beer and had a foray into some nasty peach schnapps or some weird schnapps and liqueurs,” he stated. “We’d play gigs and see bands on the L.A. circuit and feel like we didn’t belong, like we were outcasts and misfits in our Iron Maiden T-shirts, almost like second-class citizens. But there was a unity in what we were doing, and it was a lot of fun. We were all equally outcasts, loners and metalheads. There was strength in that.”

One of the big questions that has loomed over the storied career of legendary metal band Metallica was, “Why does …And Justice For All have no bass to it?” It’s a question that has been brought up many times over the years and has puzzled countless fans, especially after the fantastic Master Of Puppets.

But that question can now be laid to rest as Steve Thompson, who mixed the album, has opened up and explained everything that happened to lead to the absence of bass on that album.

In an interview with Ultimate-Guitar, Thompson explains exactly what happened:

We had to get the drum sound up the way he had it. I wasn’t a fan of it. So now [Lars Ulrich] goes, “See the bass guitar?” and I said, “Yeah, great part, man. He killed it.” He said, “I want you to bring down the bass where you can barely, audibly hear it in the mix.” I said, “You’re kidding. Right?”

He said, “No. Bring it down.” I bring it down to that level and he says, “Now drop it down another 5 db.” I turned around and looked at [James] Hetfield and said, “He’s serious?” It just blew me away.

I wanted to take “Master of Puppets” and blow that away. That was my sonic direction for “… And Justice For All.” It was all there but I think they were looking for more garagey-type sound without bass. And the bass was great; it was perfect.

It was a shame because I’m the one getting the sh-t for the lack of bass.

I remember when Metallica got elected to the Hall of Fame, they flew us out and I’m sitting with Lars. He goes, “Hey, what happened to the bass in “… Justice?” He actually asked me that. I wanted to cold cock him right there.

Well, there you have it. The most vocal and noticeable member, Mr. Lars Ulrich, is again the reason behind yet another issue in the band’s career. Good job, sir.

Je doute fort qu'il y ait 200 riffs signés Kirk Hammett dans toute la discographie du groupe...

Edith me fait remarquer que c'est quand même lui qui a écrit le riff d'Enter Sandman !
