Je suis en pleine écoute et pour l'instant... il a pas menti !
C'est old school à mort, 100% thrash, tempo rapide, voix couillue et pas pop, et bien sur pleins de solos. Bref c'est cool !

En résumé: il a tout plaqué au Canada pour rejoindre sa dulcinée en Angleterre, ce qui explique l'annulation de la tournée prévue fin 2018 et le "retard" de parution du dernier album. Qui a été composé et enregistré très rapidement parce qu'il fallait que Jean-François fasse sortir sa frustration. Ah et cette fois, il dit que c'est Never Neverland son meilleur album. Prochaine réévaluation dans deux ans, s'il ne déménage pas entre temps.

Il a raison, Never Neverland est bien son meilleur album.

Je précisais son opinion sur la question parce qu'il change d'avis à chaque interview (il a longtemps regretté la prod trop "lisse" de Never Neverland par rapport à celle d'Alice in Hell, notamment).

Son absence sur le site était une anormalité à laquelle il était temps de mettre fin : la chronique d'Alice in Hell, le mythique premier album d'Annihilator.

Je viens de lancer l'écoute de Ballistic... et, visiblement, rien n'a changé depuis Annihilator, qui est peu ou prou l'album avec lequel j'avais lâché l'affaire (par changement de goûts personnel, et non par rejet du projet). - Donc, pour le moment, entre deux bidules usants de funeral doom et de drone/ambiant, ça fait 'achement de bien, ce p'tit thrash.

Puis j'suis nigaud moi. J'ai arrêté d'écouter le groupe quand Waters est revenu au chant alors qu'il est de loin mon chanteur préféré du groupe.

MFF, t'en penses quoi, toi, sinon, de Metal ?

C'est l'album avec tous les guests ? Il y a longtemps que je ne l'ai pas écouté et je n'en avais pas gardé un souvenir impérissable. Sur la dernière décennie, je retiens Annihilator (que tu m'avais vendu ) et Suicide Society, avec ses choeurs tout mimis. Les autres m'ont moins marqué, même si la recette est toujours déclinée avec rigueur et savoir-faire.

Ben justement Metal a été réenregistré avec Dave Lombardo à la batterie et Stu Block au chant. Ca s'appelle logiquement Metal II.



earMusic has announced a remarkable reissue series of (almost) the entire ANNIHILATOR catalog. "Metal II" kicks off this extensive catalog campaign that will give you special editions, bonus material, exclusive and previously unreleased tunes.

And "Metal II" is only the first taste, ahead of a huge catalog campaign covering studio records and long-lost rarities. In total, 18 records are going to be released over the next few years, including the original 2007 version of the "Metal" album.

"Metal II" has been given an incredible overhaul with the one and only Dave Lombardo (SLAYER) killing the drums and lead vocals "re-invented" by the great Stu Block (INTO ETERNITY, ICED EARTH). The guest list on the album is huge: Willie Adler (LAMB OF GOD), Alexi Laiho (CHILDREN OF BODOM), Steve "Lips" Kudlow (ANVIL), Dan Beehler (EXCITER), Jesper Strömblad (IN FLAMES), Angela Gossow (ARCH ENEMY), Jeff Loomis (ARCH ENEMY, NEVERMORE), Anders Björler (THE HAUNTED, AT THE GATES) and Corey Beaulieu (TRIVIUM).

Waters passed over mixing duties to legendary engineer Mike Fraser (AC/DC, VAN HALEN) and it was remastered by Maor Appelbaum.

"Dave was in my favorite band ever (SLAYER)," Waters says, "and continues to evolve and play in many diverse bands, like MISFITS, SUICIDAL TENDENCIES, DEAD CROSS, MR. BUNGLE and many other projects. It was an honor to be on the same record as Lombardo. And he uses the 'Reign In Blood' ride cymbal!! Yes! The ACTUAL ride cymbal we hear on that classic record."

Waters reveals that "Stu has been the vocalist that I have (publicly) wanted to be ANNIHILATOR's singer, ever since I heard him in the Canadian band INTO ETERNITY, but I never got the opportunity to get him! He is the next generation of amazing vocalists that is grabbing the microphone from such icons as [Bruce] Dickinson and [Rob] Halford. And our paths SHOULD have crossed a long time ago, but we are here now!

"So I got a hold of them both," Waters continues, "and they both loved the tunes and both said 'FUCK YES'! And I said to Stu, 'You've got three takes', so there's blemishes and warts and fuck-ups everywhere. And I said the same to Dave, 'get it done'. And watching pros do this is mind-blowing because you don't have the best sounds, but you have the best players."

"Metal II" is dedicated to the memory of Eddie Van Halen and Laiho.

Canada's ANNIHILATOR is the lifework of Waters. Drôle d'initiative, cette façon de revisiter ses albums. J'écouterai ce que ça donne, avec un vrai batteur et un chanteur unique, ça peut donner quelque chose d'intéressant.

Oh ! J'adore cet album, d'un amour absurde.
Je suis extrêmement curieux de cette réinvention. J'aime le fait que la setlist ait été revue, pour commencer. J'aime bien Stu Block et une véritable batterie sera un bel ajout. Grosse attente, pour ce sous-album !

Et ça démarre fort avec l'ancien meilleur titre de l'album.

In a new interview with BLABBERMOUTH.NET, Waters was asked whether his recent bout with COVID-19 affected his vocals. "It might make them better," he said. "The way I sing, it might make them better. Finally, I can do a raspy voice without having to try. No, actually, what I've done, again, with this big sort of life-changing thing in my little world, when I talked to Stu Block and Dave Lombardo about doing this — it's not a new record ['Metal II'], but I consider it 're-envisioning.' It's not meant to be some competitive thing. The drummer on the original, Mike Mangini, is probably one of the best drummers in the world. Dave Padden, our singer and guitar player, was great. It wasn't about that. It was 'Let's release a second version.' Not stomp on the past. It was something fun to do to create attention for the label that they are releasing the catalog. It's working so far. People are like, 'Wow! A new album.' I'm like, 'Well, sort of.' So I decided I'm not singing anymore. I'm a guitar player. I took over singing on my fourth record, 'King Of The Kill'."

When asked whether his abdication of vocal duties meant increased involvement for Block in ANNIHILATOR, Waters said, "Bingo. I asked him if he would do the reunion thing — because it's been 31 or 32 years or something for our first three Roadrunner albums. To North America, those are the only ones anyone has ever heard, especially the first two. We actually have another 14 albums."

Waters alluded to a possible North American reunion tour featuring past ANNIHILATOR members who played on the band's early, seminal Roadrunner Records albums, particularly 1989's "Alice In Hell" and 1990's "Never, Neverland". "Alice In Hell" vocalist Randy Rampage passed away in 2018, leaving "Never, Neverland" vocalist Coburn Pharr and "Set The World On Fire" vocalist Aaron Randall as possible guests on the proposed tour.

"If Coburn is healthy enough, he's into it," said Waters. "I told Stu I don't want to sing anymore. It's too taxing. It takes too much of a toll. I'm not a great singer. It's really tough to play and sing. I don't have that natural, awesome singing voice. Like, for example: [METALLICA's James] Hetfield and [MEGADETH's Dave] Mustaine are amazing. Hetfield for his tones, but Mustaine, as I found out singing — I've done about seven records with my band as a singer, so probably about 20 tours, including festivals — Hetfield was my guy, but Mustaine also became my guy, so to speak, he can write these rhythm guitar riffs and what James does is he'll do a simple riff and sing on it. When he's done singing, here's the real, killer James Hetfield, then he goes back to singing. That came out of JUDAS PRIEST. That's probably where he got it. [Glenn] Tipton was a genius. If you listen to [Rob] Halford on any of those classic PRIEST songs, they're playing one note on the guitar. When Halford stops, here's the riff. That's Hetfield. Dave Mustaine threw out all that garbage. He's playing all this crazy-timed stuff and able to sing over it. It's incredible.

"I'm not in that league," he continued. "I think I'm a good guitar and bass player — I do all the bass on the albums. I think I'm pretty good at guitar and bass and some other things, but guys like that are just the top. Fans know it because of the songs, but I think musicians who take this seriously for a career look at these guys and go, 'They're so much bigger and better than what you see on the news sites posting and showing people making a mistake on YouTube.' They're beyond genius. I was like, 'Let me stay on guitar like I used to do. Do you want to come and sing with us anytime we do shows, like the anniversary tours?' [Stu] said, 'Absolutely for the anniversary tour. It would be a blast.' Plus, he's a good backup if one or the other singers wasn't feeling well or can't make it."

Oui le but de la plupart des réenregistrements est de récupérer les droits de morceaux sortis sur un ancien label, mais ce n'est pas le groupe qui décide si un album est dispo ou pas en streaming.
Surtout que les autres albums sortis par le label de l'époque, SPV/Steamhammer, sont bien dispos eux (Carnival Diablos et Waking the Fury). re-

Information confirmée, cette fois, et pas des moindres : Waters arrête Annihilator. Du moins il ne prévoit pas de sortir de nouvel album sous ce nom prochainement. Mais il va continuer les tournées et surtout, enregistrer un album de hard rock avec ce qui ressemblerait à un... groupe :

"Lors d’un entretien, Jeff Waters a révélé ne pas prévoir de faire un autre album d’ANNIHILATOR et travailler sur un nouveau projet de groupe dans une veine hard rock.

Au sujet de ses plans pour ANNIHILATOR :

« Je ne prévois pas de faire un autre album d’Annihilator. […] Sachant que je suis le principal compositeur, je savais qu’à un moment donné ce serait trop, que j’allais trop me répéter ou que j’emprunterais trop à d’autres groupes que j’aime énormément. Au cours des dix dernières années, j’ai toujours dit que si je faisais un album qui me ferait dire : « Je ne pourrais probablement pas faire mieux », ce serait le moment où il faudrait que j’arrête de faire des albums. C’est un peu le sentiment que j’ai avec Ballistic, Sadistic, il est vraiment bon. Ce que j’ai envie de faire, c’est une tournée anniversaire pour nos trois premiers albums avec les chanteurs originaux et Stu [Block], et faire le Sweden Rock, le Hellfest, le Wacken et tous ces grands festivals, et m’amuser avec les premiers albums et line-up. Je pense que c’est le prochain truc que je vais faire live, peut-être en 2023. Et ensuite, peut-être une autre grande tournée pour le reste de la discographie avec les autres chanteurs et membres, de manière à aider la maison de disques. J’ai donc en tête encore deux grandes tournées. Ce sera vraiment amusant. »

Au sujet de son nouveau groupe :

« Je viens aussi juste de finir d’enregistrer [les guitares pour] un album que j’avais envie de faire depuis trente-cinq ans et ce n’est pas Annihilator, ce n’est pas du heavy metal, ce n’est pas du thrash metal, ce n’est pas du metal. C’est du hard rock. C’est un nouveau groupe. La batterie est en cours d’enregistrement en ce moment même à Vancouver. Le chanteur va arriver des Etats-Unis dans deux jours ici en Angleterre. La tournée anniversaire et la promotion de la discographie, puis l’autre tournée en 2024 pour le reste de la discographie, c’est pour Annihilator, mais ce nouveau groupe que j’ai est extraordinaire. C’est en gros du hard rock. Vous ne vous rendrez probablement pas compte que c’est moi à la guitare si vous l’entendez. C’est donc une autre facette de ma musique et de mon écriture que je n’ai jamais exploitée. Ce n’est pas un album de jazz. Ce n’est pas un album solo. Ce n’est pas instrumental. Ce n’est pas du blues. Ce n’est pas un genre de plagiat ou de mauvaise version d’AC/DC des années 80. C’est un groupe de hard rock. Donc c’est plutôt cool. Si je ne me trompe pas, ça sortira probablement en juin 2023. […] Je sais que la musique déchire et ce n’est pas un truc hommage. Ce n’est pas non plus un genre de projet Zoom où quatre gars enregistrent dans différentes villes dans le monde. C’est un enregistrement à gros budget avec Mike Fraser qui a enregistré avec Van Halen et AC/DC. J’essaye de faire un album à l’ancienne à gros budget, sans ordinateur et sans Auto-Tune. C’est hyper excitant, j’ai trop hâte ! »

Il est tellement mauvais, ce disque, ouais. Quasi-inécoutable.

La lucidité n'a jamais été le point fort de Jean-François, d'où la carrière en dents de scie d'Annihilator, je pense.
