QUEENSRŸCHE - The Verdict (1er mars 2019)

Rock icons QUEENSRŸCHE will release their new album, "The Verdict", on March 1, 2019 via Century Media Records. The band's forthcoming release was produced, mixed, and mastered by Chris "Zeuss" Harris (ROB ZOMBIE, ICED EARTH, HATEBREED) at Uberbeatz in Lynwood, Washington; Planet-Z in Wilbraham, Massachusetts; and Watershed Studio in Seattle, Washington. Pre-orders and formats will be announced soon.
"I'm extremely proud of what we were able to accomplish on this record," states QUEENSRŸCHE vocalist Todd La Torre. "The relentless dedication and hard work of everyone involved has been very rewarding. I am excited and looking forward to it no longer just belonging to us, but belonging to the world. We hope you all enjoy listening to it as much as we enjoyed making it!"
Michael "Whip" Wilton (guitar) adds: "'The Verdict' is the most metal and the most progressive record we have made in a long time. I couldn't possibly be more excited for everyone to hear this."
To support "The Verdict", QUEENSRŸCHE has also announced a spring U.S. headline tour with special guests FATES WARNING. THE CRINGE will be joining both bands on select dates. The tour will kick off on March 2 in Orlando, making stops in major markets such as New York, Atlanta, Chicago, and Los Angeles, and will wrap on April 3 in Seattle.
Todd spoke about "The Verdict"'s musical direction with Eclectic Arts, saying: "It's got more driving songs on this record than the last one… I think there's elements that are more progressive — some different time signatures. It's a good-flowing album. There's some slow, kind of haunting, creepy, cool stuff on this record," he continued. "Like I say, there's more progressive elements on this one, I think — certainly more, I think, than the last one. The song 'Condition Hüman' was kind of progressive in QUEENSRŸCHE's standards, so there's kind of some of those elements going on. Really good lyrical content — thought-provoking stuff. Certainly never trying to tell anyone what to think, but to think. Again, a lot of it deals with things that are happening in the world that everyone can identify with and relate to. I tried to have some really good vocal acrobatics on this [album]. There's not a ton of high singing, but there's some high stuff on there vocally. I mean, it just sounds like a great QUEENSRŸCHE album to me. But you never know until you put it out to everyone, and then it's not yours anymore."
For the past 18 months, drummer Scott Rockenfield has been taking time off from QUEENSRŸCHE's touring activities to spend time with his young son, who was born in early 2017. Filling in for him is former KAMELOT drummer Casey Grillo. However, QUEENSRŸCHE has not yet indicated if Rockenfield was involved with the making of the disc, although it did confirm that Grillo did not play on the record.
"The Verdict" will mark QUEENSRŸCHE's third full-length release with La Torre, following the departure of Geoff Tate in 2012.

A brand-new QUEENSRŸCHE song, "Man The Machine", can be streamed below. En attendant cette nouvelle livraison, le groupe va sortir un coffret anniversaire pour les 30 ans d'Empire.
"Le groupe de Métal progressif originaire de Seattle, Queensrÿche, travaille présentement sur un coffret 30e anniversaire de leur album le plus connu (
), Empire, lancé en 1990 et sur lequel on retrouve le grand succès, la balade Silent Lucidity.
En entrevue avec Eonmusic, l’ancien chanteur Geoff Tate a encensé l’album, le déclarant comme « un de ses albums favoris », juste avant de mentionner son implication active dans la création de cette réédition anniversaire, en plus d’aborder son désir de le jouer dans son entièreté sur scène.
Tate : « J’aimerais jouer chaque chanson [de l’album Empire] parce qu’on retrouve sur cet album des chansons que je n’ai pas eu l’occasion de jouer souvent. Il y a des chansons que j’ai jouées peut-être 10 fois dans ma vie et une d’entre elles est Anybody Listening? Quand j’évoluais dans Queensrÿche, cette chanson ne faisait jamais partie de notre setlist. Pour des raisons qui m’échappent, nous avions beaucoup de difficulté à la jouer comme il faut. J’aimerais beaucoup rejouer cette chanson; comme il faut cette fois ».
À propos du coffret, Tate : « Il y a coffret qui sortira. Je suis en train de me préparer à travailler là-dessus avec eux maintenant. Ce que je peux dire pour l’instant, en ce qui me concerne, c’est que ce sera un coffret phénoménal. Je vais y apporter plusieurs trucs, comme des entrevues, des commentaires et des notes ».
Questionné à savoir quel sera le contenu musical de ce coffret, Tate est resté évasif : « Je sais exactement ce qui se retrouvera sur ce coffret, mais il est beaucoup trop tôt pour en parler ».
Rappelons que Geoff Tate a été remplacé dans Queensrÿche par le chanteur Todd La Torre, anciennement de Crimson Glory."

Empire s'est vendu 3 fois plus que OM, sans doute grâce à Silent lucidity. Après de nos jours, c'est sûr qu'on retient plus OM, mais peut-être pas au USA.

S'ils y mettent leur MTV unplugged en entier, ça me pousserait à acheter. Les interviews et commentaires de Tate (ou des autres) beaucoup moins.

Verdict ? 
Une première écoute qui m'a donné envie d'y retourner : c'est sûr, les mecs jouent la sécurité, on reconnaît certains tics de compositions et de production (les effets sur la voix, notamment) mais c'est assez dynamique pour maintenir l'attention pendant tout l'album. Et oui, La Torre chante remarquablement bien, dans la lignée de Tate mais sans le côté grandiloquent (enfin, un peu moins, c'est pas Nick Drake, non plus). Même si ce n'est pas l'enthousiasme délirant (pour l'instant), c'est déjà une belle surprise pour moi qui n'attend plus grand chose du Rÿche depuis longtemps.

Moi mon attention n'a pas du tout été maintenu. Ce groupe est vraiment devenu quelconque, un comble. La Torre est le principal intérêt, mais ça s'arrête là. Ce n'est pas meilleur que le précédent album.

Le 3 1ers albums sont indispensables ! Surtout leur chef d'oeuvre, qui, comme tout le monde le sait, est Rage For Order, du Star Trek Metal pour l'époque.

4-5 écoutes de "The Verdict" et je n'ai pas de vraie envie d'y retourner... Pas un mauvais disque, il y a du boulot, mais pas de trucs assez accrocheurs pour moi. Tant pis.
Pour Tate, attention, car sa voix a beaucoup changé en un court laps de temps, à chaque album entre 1986 et 1994. Et franchement, le Tate de 1994 (Promised Land) qui se rapproche le plus de celui d'aujourd'hui enterre le Tate d'Avantasia. Une richesse et profondeur phénoménale.
