Jeff Waters annonce que le prochain album d’ANNIHILATOR verra le jour en 2017 et que pour le moment, ce qu’il compose est « plutôt agressif et semble revenir aux premières époques. »

Voici ce qu’il déclare : « En réponse à l’énorme intérêt qu’il y a par rapport au prochain album studio d’ANNIHILATOR (le seizième !), je peux seulement dire que je ne vais PAS vous livrer, les fans, un album d’ANNIHILATOR plus mélodique et calme… Ce que je compose ces derniers temps est plutôt agressif et semble revenir aux premières époques. Ce n’est souvent pas ce qu’il se passe et tu ne peux pas vraiment prévoir ce que les choses deviennent… mais je voulais vous faire savoir quelle direction le nouvel album est en train de prendre ! Je suis certain que beaucoup de fans de thrash de la vieille école seront content d’ANNIHILATOR en 2017 !! … et nous vous aimons, vous tous, les fans de metal ! »

Il évoque également un projet de Blu-ray/DVD/CD : « Actuellement, je travaille sur le package Blu Ray/DVD/CD le plus génial et plaisant pour les fans qui soit et qui devrait être terminé en octobre et sortira, si on a de la chance, avant Noël… Ca demande beaucoup de travail et c’est fait à cent pour cent pour vous et non pour nous, le label ou l’argent… UDR a été très courtois en balançant beaucoup d’argent dans ce package, sachant que ça ne leur rapportera pas une tonne d’argent. Un gros merci à UDR de nous soutenir ! Le package sera vraisemblablement constitué de trois disques Blu-ray/DVD plus deux CDs : un concert normal, un concert acoustique et un genre de mini documentaire sur l’année 2016. »

Bon, ça doit faire au moins dix ans que Waters nous fait le coup du retour aux premiers albums, mais si le prochain est aussi bon que le dernier, je prends.

Le "projet Blu-ray/DVD/CD" sortira finalement le 27 janvier - c'est donc râpé pour Noël - et s'intitule "Triple Threat".

C'est également le seul bon album qu'il ait fait.

Et pour l'anecdote, il est l'auteur d'une chanson de Céline Dion, mais il a toujours refusé de révéler laquelle.

Annihilator va tourner pour la première fois... Au Canada. On apprend aussi que le LP #16 devrait sortir en octobre et que Waters a - encore - changé de musiciens (pas tous) :

Au cours des 20 dernières années, Annihilator a donné des centaines de concerts à l’étranger, mais n’a fait aucune tournée au Canada. Pour remédier à cette situation, Jeff Waters, le fondateur du groupe d’Ottawa, a décidé de cesser d’attendre après les invitations de promoteurs et d’en organiser une à son goût.

En discutant au téléphone avec le chanteur, guitariste et compositeur Jeff Waters, on constate rapidement qu’il n’est pas du genre à embellir les faits. Ainsi, quand on lui demande pourquoi Annihilator n’a pas fait de tournée au Canada depuis plus de 20 ans, il nous rappelle la dure réalité vécue par de nombreuses formations métal au début des années 1990: «À moins de jouer une musique dans le style de Pantera et de Sepultura ou de faire partie de la vague nu métal, on n’intéressait pas les labels et les promoteurs de spectacles», relate Jeff avant de préciser: «À cette époque, je pensais que ma carrière était terminée, puis en 1994, j’ai lancé King Of The Kill, mon plus grand succès en Europe et au Japon. À ce moment-là, Annihilator a disparu d’Amérique du Nord», mentionne-t-il en riant.

Après King Of The Kill, la formation thrash métal dont Jeff Waters est l’unique membre permanent a lancé 11 autres disques, incluant Suicidal Society, en nomination aux Juno Awards 2017 dans la catégorie meilleur album métal/hard rock de l’année (alors qu’il est sorti en 2015). Après avoir tenté un retour sur les marchés américain et canadien en 2010, le groupe a donné quelques concerts au Québec, en Ontario et en Alberta en 2011, sans plus: «Je fais des tournées à travers le monde depuis 1989. Je veux en faire une au Canada au moins une fois dans ma vie», dit le musicien.

Jeff est heureux d’avoir fait confiance à son instinct, car il n’a eu aucune difficulté à réserver des salles de spectacle, particulièrement dans l’ouest et au centre du Canada, sans oublier le Québec: «Là où se trouve les fans de métal les plus «hardcore» au pays. Je le sais parce que j’habite à Ottawa et je viens souvent à Montréal pour voir des concerts», dit Jeff, ce qui est vrai.

Maintenant que les détails de la tournée sont réglés, Jeff, qui sera accompagné sur scène par le guitariste Aaron Homma (Killotorous), le batteur Fabio Alessandrini (Vescera) et le bassiste Rich Hinks (Aeon Zen, avec qui Jeff a composé le 16e album qui sortira en octobre 2017), a hâte de retrouver les admirateurs d’Annihilator. D’ailleurs, durant notre entrevue, on se rend compte qu’il n’est pas conscient du fait que son groupe bénéficie d’une réputation enviable au Québec. De la même façon, il est le premier à dire que tous les disques d’Annihilator ne sont pas des classiques: «Ultimement, c’est aux fans de décider si un disque est bon à leur oreille. N’empêche, quand je regarde en arrière, je me dis qu’il y en a des bons, des moins bons, des moyens, un ou deux classiques et plusieurs chansons que je regrette d’avoir composées!» Jeff croit qu’il admet facilement ce genre de choses parce qu’il a eu la chance d’explorer différents sons et styles auprès des nombreux musiciens qui ont fait partie du groupe au fil des ans: «Je pense aussi que c’est ce qui explique pourquoi Annihilator existe encore. Ça et l’honnêteté, le travail acharné et l’amour de la musique.»

ANNIHILATOR will release their new album, "For The Demented", on November 3. Waters stated : "I think this is one of the best ones we've done. And it ended up probably being [that way] because I had a co-producer come in for the first part of the record and he also co-wrote all the music with me on the record. And that's our bass player Rich Hinks, our U.K. bass player. So that brought a huge kick in the butt to me. I think that livened me right up and just woke me up to a bunch of things. He made some comments about what he liked about the early ANNIHILATOR style and he kind of made it clear to me that I don't have to be one of these musicians that go back to some of their earlier successful albums and try to copy it, because that woud be the biggest mistake in the world. He kind of guided me there without actually getting me to just think, 'Okay, go back and do something like that.' He sort of went around that, pushed me to go around that, and the result was kind of like the first two records, the way I kind of recorded it all and the way the production went and the way some of the arrangements of the songs were put together. And by the end of the music writing, I realized, 'Holy shit! He just guided me to doing exactly what I should never have done, which is go back to the roots and try to pull off getting something almost as good as the first couple.' And I think that's exactly what we ended up getting."
Regarding the musical direction he had in mind when starting to write material for the new ANNIHILATOR album, Jeff said: "Unlike the last record, 'Suicide Society', I don't want to let the majority of my influences and the metal fan, metal musician side of me get the best of me on this record. 'Suicide Society' was a good record — I'll say good right in the middle; it wasn't crappy, it wasn't amazing, it was good — but I did realize later that I had just sort of said… When I was singing the record, for example, I would sing with a [James] Heltfield-wannabe kind of vibe on certain words, or the MEGADETH, [Dave] Mustaine-ish thing, or maybe even a Layne Staley- or Ozzy [Osbourne]-wannabe kind of thing. And it's not 'wannabe' — it's more like these are my four favorite singers other than [Rob] Halford and [Bruce] Dickinson, you know? And David Lee Roth… And Bon Scott. But I was more of a fan on the last record, musically and vocally, and that really came through — you can hear the influences and where I got everything from in my music history and influence. This one, I wrote down, 'Do not do the Hetfields, Mustaines, this and that. Go back to the 'King Of The Kill' record and the 'Alice In Hell' record.' Because, despite a guy named Randy Rampage being the singer on the 'Alice In Hell' record, fans that know of our early roots know of our demos that I sang on and knew that, many years before 'Alice In Hell' was recorded, songs like 'Alison Hell' and all these were on demo forms through the cassette-trading networks that the world had then, and that was kind of a more heavy, more original kind of vocal style that I did. And that went through into the first bunch of singers with ANNIHILATOR — my influence producing the vocals for these guys. It was, basically, 'Do this, 'cause this is what I would do.' And that was a key on this new record, as I was going to stay away from trying to be influenced by other singers — get back to my own thing, if there is such a thing — and I think I did that this time. And then the other thing was, well, musically, of course, was to just… If you write a riff and it sounds very SLAYER-ish, and you love it and you say, 'I don't care if it's a little SLAYER-ish. I love this riff,' you're gonna throw it in the garbage, and you're gonna write something that is more… [where] people would say, 'That's Waters-ish.' So that was really the main key. And the other one that I kind of broke the rule on, the third thing, I think, I said on the letter to myself, I guess, the notes, was that… 'Don't rely on catchy, commercial choruses,' because that becomes, in a songwriter sense, a very tempting thing. The catchier your choruses are, the more memorable they are; therefore, technically, you could call that the more commercial that is, the more accessible and memorable or whatever. So, throw that out the window and go back to what I was doing in the early days where I didn't give a damn about the choruses; it was about the whole song and not just about building around the chorus. 'Cause I got too easily sucked into that one for quite a few years now. And those 'chorus-centered' albums were steaming turds! I know people like merci foule fête thinks some of those are good, but hey, what does he know?
This time I just said, 'Start with an intro,' 'Start with a solo thing,' 'Go to a verse,' 'Go to a pre-chorus,' 'Go to a chorus,' and make all those as good as I can and inch my way through it rather than basing everything around a catchy chorus. And half of that worked; the other half, I just came back to what I usually did. And the other half was just, some really bizarre stuff, and that was kind of like the early days."

Donc Jeff est en train de dire que j'aime le précedent album plus que lui.
Bon le coup du retour aux deux premiers lp, il le fait à chaque sortie depuis au moins dix ans, donc ça ne donne pas beaucoup d'infos sur ce qu'il y aura dans le prochain. Pas de bidouilles electro indus a priori, c'est déjà ça (même si c'était hautement improbable).

Canadian thrashers ANNIHILATOR will release their sixteenth studio album, "For The Demented", on November 3 via Neverland Music/Silver Lining Music. The follow-up to 2015's "Suicide Society" will be available in a limited-edition digipack with lenticular cover, a jewel-case CD, a twelve-inch, 180-gram colored vinyl in gatefold and digital download. "It was time to analyze what a lot of fans over the years have kept telling me," says ANNIHILATOR guitarist and main songwriter Jeff Waters. "It was time to sit down and figure out 'why' ANNIHILATOR's early 'thrash-meets-melodic' caught the ears of so many and to try to sweep the 'fan' part of my writing/playing/singing out the door and welcome back the mostly original Waters writing that was to be the first four ANNIHILATOR albums."

Waters didn't venture back alone while looking back through ANNIHILATOR's history. "I was well aware that trying to re-capture the past usually fails, or at least won't come close," he says. "So, I decided to bring in fresh ears, both musically and physically with Rich Hinks, my bassist for the last few years. And doing most all of the records by myself, including writing and playing most all on my own, as well as mixing, mastering, engineering, etc… well, it can become routine and can often hinder you from being objective and more creative.

"Rich came in and co-wrote the music with me, as well as co-produced the beginning stages of the record. His background of classic thrash metal meets a newer 'math' metal style was the perfect combination for me to simply ask, 'What do you think of this?' He would most-often reply with 'not the ANNIHILATOR style I like,' so we would keep going until we both felt that core ANNIHILATOR riffing and writing style presented itself."

Jeff continues: "Bottom line, 'For The Demented' captures some feel from ANNIHILATOR's 1985-87 demos mixed with the first four ANNIHILATOR records. Back to the thrash-meets-melody but with some pure Waters guitar riffing, upgraded lead guitar shredding and vocals back to the demo days meets the 'King of The Kill' record. Lyrically, I placed a theme on the record: the human mind and all of its glory, complexity, diversity, weaknesses and insanity! Pretty much the craziness of the music is matched by the lyrics.

"I think metal fans are going to hear much of what they have been waiting for from ANNIHILATOR," adds Waters.

Since 1989, ANNIHILATOR have not stopped putting out records and touring the world. Despite the ever-changing climate of the metal world (and releasing a series of "different" metal records with various lineups along the way), Waters and company have consistently delivered strong albums since the band's debut, "Alice In Hell". Then there was 1990's best-selling "Never, Neverland", 1995's "King Of The Kill", "Schizo Deluxe" in 2005 and many other critically acclaimed releases up until "Suicide Society". The "under-the-radar" influence of this band, and Waters, has been felt throughout the entire realm of the metal world by a ton of well-known musicians and bands; that influence even stretching into the hard rock and instrumentalist genre.

Waters, in his usual humble manner, offers this in response: "ANNIHILATOR's music has been influenced by a good hundred of my favorite bands and musicians; you can hear their contributions to what I have been doing all throughout ANNIHILATOR's catalog. It's a bonus and an honor when bands and musicians I love mention that I had something to do with their playing or songs!"

Il tue ce morceau !

On dirait bien que Waters nous fait un retour en mode panzer, autrement dit fuck les refrains, meublage avec solos et tout à fond. Soit l'inverse du précedent album (le tempo etait rapide aussi ceci dit).Je ne suis pas très enthousiaste, surtout qu"il m'a l'air de chanter à l'arrache alors qu'il avait soigné cet aspect là sur Suicide Society. Et le passage du milieu, c'est le même que My precious lunatic Asylum mais en moins bien. A voir si la tendance se confirme sur l'album entier mais ce morceau ne m'emballe pas des masses.

Ca recycle à mort, c'est clair. Mais c'est comme ça depuis 1999 (d'ailleurs, c'est à cette époque-là qu'il s'est mis à promettre un retour aux sources à chaque disque, faut croire que ça a été son point de non-retour).

Ce nouvel extrait, c'est un peu comme d'hab' en ce qui me concerne : ça s'écoute, mais j'arrive pas à m'y intéresser.

C'est ce qui me plait justement, je n'avais pas du tout accroché au précédent avec ce chant trop chiadé qui ne colle pas au groupe (ni au "chanteur" si on peut considérer Waters comme un vrai chanteur). Ça me rappelle un peu l'éponyme de 2010, le dernier album d'Annihilator que j'ai vraiment aimé.

Ah par contre j'aime bien l'éponyme aussi. Moins que le dernier, mais il était pas mal. Le côté mélodique a toujours fait partie de l'adn du "groupe", disons que selon les albums, Waters déplace le curseur selon ses envies (généralement, il change de sens à chaque album). Le côté chiadé, tu l'as déjà dès Never Neverland et encore plus sur Set the World on Fire - on lui avait beaucoup reproché à l'époque. Or, Waters est un très bon compositeur, et c'est plutôt dans le registre mélodique que je le préfère, tant que ça ne vire pas au mièvre - et ce n'était vraiment pas le cas sur le dernier de mon point de vue. Je veux dire, des groupes qui tabassent à toute berzingue sur des schémas vieux de 30 ans, il y en a plein les labels, pas la peine d'allonger la liste.

"The following contains a graphic interpretation of a true crime story that includes potentially disturbing images and lyrical content," says ANNIHILATOR's Jeff Waters abut the video. "We realize this is not exactly the most pleasant subject to write about, however, in the world of being a writer and musician, sometimes these stories can spawn a song! While many of the songs from the new album, 'For The Demented', have positive messages in them, this one does not!

Waters adds: "This is about a criminally insane guy who murdered his 'annoying' girlfriend to 'silence' her voice. He then eats pieces of her, as a means of keeping her alive inside of him. Yeah, crazy, but when you watch horror movies, crime shows and own a few CANNIBAL CORPSE t-shirts, this is tame in comparison.

"I like the three dimensions of this: seeing the lyrics roll by: hearing/feeling the music and watching the horror... almost difficult to take it all in, in one view.

C'est assez dérangeant cette affaire. Je déteste les paroles et le clip, mais le morceau n'est vraiment pas mauvais en revanche !
"One To Kill" est une chouette piste aussi, d'une tradition bientôt millénaire. Mais c'est ce qui plait chez Annihilator, donc...
Waters est définitivement mon chanteur préféré pour le groupe. Sa voix possède un timbre et des intonations particulières très propices à intégrer du thrash.
Ce disque devrait être assez bon. J'ai un peu décroché du groupe dernièrement (Feast et le suivant, mouais...), mais là, j'avoue être tenté à nouveau.

Quand tu habites près de l'Allemagne, c'est cool parce que les groupes metal avec un minimum de renommée y font systématiquement plusieurs étapes.    Ce qui est moins cool, c'est qu'ils ont tendance à zapper l'est de la France.
