Tiens.

Carrément old school !

METALLICA - 72 Seasons (14/04/2023) 72-seasons

METALLICA has confirmed the title and release date of its forthcoming 12th studio album: "72 Seasons" will be available April 14, 2023 via the band's own Blackened Recordings. Produced by Greg Fidelman with METALLICA's James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich, and clocking in at over 77 minutes, the 12-track "72 Seasons" is METALLICA's first full length collection of new material since 2016's "Hardwired…To Self-Destruct". The album will be released in formats including 2LP 140g black vinyl and limited-edition variants, CD and digital.

"72 Seasons" is heralded by first single "Lux Æterna", a short, sharp blast that distills 40 years of METALLICA into three and a half minutes. "Lux Æterna" is available now to stream and download, and as an instant-grat track with all pre-orders of "72 Seasons". The "Lux Æterna" video, directed by Tim Saccenti, can be seen below.

Says METALLICA about the clip: "We recently traveled to Los Angeles to capture our performance using some crazy cutting-edge technology."

Speaking on the concept of the album title, Hetfield says: "72 seasons. The first 18 years of our lives that form our true or false selves. The concept that we were told 'who we are' by our parents. A possible pigeonholing around what kind of personality we are. I think the most interesting part of this is the continued study of those core beliefs and how it affects our perception of the world today. Much of our adult experience is reenactment or reaction to these childhood experiences. Prisoners of childhood or breaking free of those bondages we carry."

The complete track listing for "72 Seasons" is:

01. 72 Seasons
02. Shadows Follow
03. Screaming Suicide
04. Sleepwalk My Life Away
05. You Must Burn!
06. Lux Æterna
07. Crown Of Barbed Wire
08. Chasing Light
09. If Darkness Had A Son
10. Too Far Gone?
11. Room Of Mirrors
12. Inamorata

Says METALLICA: "The album package was once again conceived and art directed by our good friend, acclaimed designer David Turner and his team. David, who won a Grammy for his work on 'Death Magnetic', is the man behind the look and feel of all of our recent releases, including 'Through The Never', 'S&M2', and 'Hardwired'."

Oui, y a une grosse vibe Kill'em All plutôt rafraichissante.

D'ailleurs ça a l'air d'être assumé, James chante Lightning to the Nations à 2m40 !

Ca par exemple ça me fume :

Metalleux footix a écrit:After 6 long years, Metallica have finally decided once more to curse us with new music to prove that even though it's been over 40 years since their formation, they're still as mediocre as ever, if not worse. So, today, the 28th of November in the year of our lord 2022, marks the day in which Metallica presents to us their latest single, "Lux Æterna".

Let's be honest here, Metallica hasn't released anything anywhere above "mediocre" since 1988, and personally I believe that they haven't released anything good since 1983, but that's just my own belief. Back in 2016, ye olde house brand metal band Metallica released Hardwired... to Self-Destruct, which was one of the most pathetic and boring attempts I've ever heard from any old band to go back to their roots, and it seemed as if that was finally it, as if finally Metallica decided to just preserve their legacy and release endless live albums for the rest of their existence, but they had to come and ruin it again with what I predict will be another disappointing album that will nevertheless get a ton of hype because of metal dads that still treat "Master of Puppets" as the greatest song ever recorded.

Now, regarding the song itself, it really just sounds like a Hardwired outtake. "Lux Æterna" presents us with a throwback to very early Metallica, with a main riff very reminiscent of what we had Kill 'Em All, but the entire thing feels a bit too uninspired, as if it was just the band trying to rip off its former self instead of recreating themselves in a way that doesn't make this song sound like such a bore. This main riff gets old really fast because it's overplayed throughout the song: in the intro, in the choruses, in the bridge, in the outro... it seems as if Kirk and James are so proud of coming up with it that they just want to play it everywhere they can. When said riff isn't being played, you only really get 2 things: a chromatic riff that sounds almost good at the very beginning and the very end of the song, and a tonal chord progression in the verses and pre-chorus that's just a filler for the riff. Quite frankly the chord progression is so boring and basic that it makes the whole song sound dull, almost anti-thrash, and the mild tempo doesn't help it at all, let alone the very square palm-muted strumming; the only thing keeping this whole song from being some regular modern hard rock is about 20 BPM.

If the overall riffing in this song wasn't as dull as a plastic knife, the guitar "solo" in the middle of the song definitely puts the listener to sleep; the best analogy I can make of it is Kirk Hammett trying to imitate Kerry King with a bit too much wah. The solo is just senseless pseudo-shredding with some dissonance and whatever-the-fuck-you-can-play sections, it's just a bore, it's not good in any way imaginable. Maybe one of the few saving graces in this song is are James' vocals which are, for his age, holding up relatively well, but they're certainly missing that old harshness and tone they had back in the day, instead sounding much cleaner, and while I'd much rather have the old thing, these vocals are just enough.

The drumming is what you'd expect from Lars, with the mixing being crap and the highs being too high, and while the drums are ok in terms of just being played properly, they fail at providing anything to the music other than a steady, square rhythm, or in other words, they're expendable and lack much more purpose than the most basic one it has. The bass guitar is also just not taking any mildly interesting role in the music, just limiting itself to mimic the rhythm guitar to a point in which it's almost annoying that Trujillo's talent is just being locked away from this song either by his own choosing, or by the rest of the band's.

Judging just from this track, I can predict that Metallica's upcoming album, 72 Seasons, will be just another stain in their now-long history, joining "Hardwired" as another crappy attempt at reliving their old glory. Hopefully whatever we find on that album will be better than this here track, but judging by my previous predictions from pre-release singles, namely with Sabaton's latest album, there's nothing to be hyped about.
